Whirling Dervish (wurl-ing dur-vish n.): A mystical dancer who stands between the material and cosmic worlds. This dance is part of a sacred ceremony in which the dervish rotates in a precise rhythm. Representing the earth revolving on its axis while orbiting the sun, the purpose of the ritual whirling is for the dervish to empty the mind and body of all distracting thoughts, to channel the blessings from heaven and give them to the earth, accessing a trance-like state; released from the body (in this state), dizziness is conquered. It is wonderful to find a way to channel the storms of our lives into movements that still us, to find a way to be safe in spite of all the storms, simply radiating our own colourful energy! Whirling is a way of accessing perfect stillness. In the centre of your being you are perfect; often too frenetically caught in the periphery of our own orbit, we are spun around by our lives. Whirling is a practice which helps us to centre into ourselves and find the quiet by spinning instead of being spun. Arum has been whirling for about four years now and is inspired by the dichotomy of the frenetic whirling and the perfect peace it can bring.
