Despite improvements in the acute management of heart attacks and stroke, the chronic conditions of Cardiovascular Disease are increasing. This talk will deal with general and particular approaches to improve cardiovascular health leading to increased wellness and lower risk of heart attacks and stroke. Cardiovascular Disease is the leading cause of death worldwide. According to the 1990-2010 Global Cardiovascular Disease Atlas study, in sub-Saharan Africa 4000 to 5000 per 100 000 people in disability adjusted life years (DALYs) were lost through Cardiovascular Disease. From the Heart and Stroke foundation: “Premature deaths caused by heart and blood vessel diseases (CVD) in people of working age (35-64 years) are expected to increase by 41% between 2000 and 2030. The negative economic impact of this will be enormous”.
A simple, effective and sustainable approach to Diabetes and Metabolic Syndrome treatment and prevention. Diabetes Type 2 and Metabolic Syndrome (pre-Diabetes, obesity, high blood pressure, and inflammatory blood markers) are fast becoming a very costly epidemic in South Africa, despite much awareness and education over the last 20 years. The talk offers alternative approaches to the prevention of Diabetes and obesity that is personally sustainable and economically feasible. The Banting system of reducing carbohydrates and increasing natural fats results in metabolic changes from sugar burning to fat burning thereby reducing blood sugar, excessive insulin stimulation and the consequent risks of obesity and Diabetes Type 2.
